The recent snow has caused havoc with some people’s holiday plans. If you are one of the people caught up in the chaos, you may be entitled to a payout.

Flights within the EU or European airlines going worldwide are covered by EU rules. This means that if your flight was cancelled because of the snow, the airline has a responsibility to look after you and get you to your intended destination.

Firstly, you should either have been offered a refund or an alternative flight (possibly with a different airline). If there is a long wait, you should also have been offered accommodation overnight and meal vouchers. If your wait was over 2 hours, you should also have been offered two free phone calls or emails.

Check the small print on your travel insurance carefully too as you may be able to claim for costs such as new flights. Some travel insurance companies will give you a pay out for things such as hotel nights missed or days of car hire missed because of cancelled flights – so it pays to make sure you have read your travel insurance policy.

However if you have missed your flight because of bad weather, you may not be covered. If you left in good time and public transport let you down you will probably be covered by your travel insurer. Generally speaking, insurers will not cover you if you are travelling to the airport in your own car and you missed your flight unless you were involved in an accident.
