The UK could require fuel rationing in the near future according to a new report.

The Lean Economy Connection warns that the UK could require fuel rationing to ensure fair and equal access to fuel. To do this, the report believes that every adult could be given ‘energy credits’ which could be traded using electronic tradable energy quotas (TEQs). Thus people could buy and sell energy credits according to their needs.

Businesses would bid for energy credits at a weekly tender and this would generate revenue which could be used for energy generation and low-carbon projects.

The report believes that without some form of energy credit system being put in place, the UK is unlikely to reach it’s Climate Change Act target of cutting emissions by 80% by 2050. The report also believes that this is a fair system which allows everyone access to limited energy supplies and that it is a good alternative to carbon taxation schemes.
