So you’ve compared flights and found the best deal – now is a great time to sort out your foreign currency to ensure you also get the best travel money rates around.

Here are CheckoutSpy’s top tips for your travel money:

1. How Much Money? Plan ahead and try and work out how much cash you will need. Carrying too much money can be a safety issue however carrying too little may leave you without enough money for essentials, particularly if you are unable to access your UK bank accounts for any reason. Check if there are plenty of ATMs near where you are staying, how much cash withdrawals are likely to be, and what debit/credit cards (if any) are accepted and then estimate how much travel money you think you will need to take out in advance.

2. Book in Advance. It usually pays to book your currency in advance as you can take advantage of lower commission rates.

3. Denominations? If possible, try and stay away from larger notes – or at least get a mix of smaller and larger denominations. If you are stuck with large denomination notes only you may find that some places may not accept them particularly if you are purchasing in small amounts for example a taxi, or a drink from a newsagents.

4. Tipping? Is tipping the norm in the country you are visiting? If it is, ensure you always keep a good supply of coins and/or smaller denomination notes so that you are always able to tip appropriately. Different countries tend to have different attitudes and approaches towards tipping so it pays to do your research and know who you should be tipping and what an appropriate tip amounts to.

5. Inform Your Bank. It is wise to tell your bank if you are going on holiday, even if you are not planning on using your cards. Some banks will put an automatic stop on any card used abroad unless you inform them ahead of time. It is always a good idea to take at least one card on holiday with you, even if you aren’t planning on using it, in case of emergency.
